Tequila is a very interesting liquor. In fact, it is North America’s first distilled drink. That’s quite a distinction.
Here’s a quote about the naming history of the beverage:
Mezcal wine – tequila’s grandparent – was first produced only a few decades after the Conquest that brought the Spaniards to the New World in 1521. It was variously called mezcal brandy, agave wine, mezcal tequila and finally simply tequila – appropriately named after Tequila, a small town in a valley in Jalisco state, Mexico.
You ever wonder how people first try stuff. Like milk. How did that happen? How many people died trying mushrooms? I guess with 1000s and 1000s of experimental years, the human race can figure out a ton of stuff.
First they chewed on the agave. Then they chopped it up and stored in baskets. Then it got forgotten in a corner and fermented. Then, someone put the basket on their head and the fermented juice dropped in their mouth. And they got buzzed. And tequila was born.
